Texas Mother Who Accidentally Ran Over Her Own Toddler Charged with Negligent Homicide.
26-year-old Lexus La Stagg has been charged with negligent homicide after accidentally backing over her 3-year-old son.
The accident happened June 11th in West Houston when La Stagg was attempting to leave her apartment complex's parking lot. Early reports state that La Stagg was distracted by people in front of her car when she was backing up and never even knew she'd hit her son until moments later when someone called and told her.
"Houston police said three children were tapping on the front of the mom's Lincoln Navigator as she backed out of a parking spot. That's when she switched gears and pulled forward.
Two of the three children moved out of the way, but the woman's 3-year-old son was struck. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance but later died.
At the time of the incident the mother told police she never saw the 3-year-old, Lt. Robinson with the Houston Police Department said.
Later a witness and surveillance video showed that La Stagg was driving when the crash happened, court documents state.
The driver, who did not show visible signs of intoxication, was questioned and released pending further investigation, according to HPD."
In Texas "criminally negligent homicide is defined as the death of another person, by an individual who was aware of the substantial risk of the circumstances, yet failed to appreciate the degree of severity." It's classified as a state felony and is punishable by 180 days to 2 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
This is truly sad.
