Mysterious Homicide of Indiana Mother and Child Being Investigated.

An anonymous 911-Caller alerted Evansville, Indiana police to a horrific scene on Wednesday that has left them puzzled.

When first responders reached the scene they found a woman laying dead in the garage of her home with face and head wounds. Upon entering the home they found a young child dead in a bedroom.

"The victims were identified as 49-year-old Kimbra Shanafelt and her daughter, 5-year-old Dahni Shanafelt, Vanderburgh County Coroner Steve Lockyear said in a statement Thursday evening after an autopsy.

But a cause and manner of death haven't been determined.

"I think something bad's happened," a concerned relative told a dispatcher.

The relative said they went to the house and went inside with a key to check on Kimbra after she had not answered her phone for a couple of days.

The relative told the dispatcher they located Dahni laying halfway under a bed and "it looks like she's thrown up or something, and she's cold, and her eyes are halfway up in her head."

"I need some help fast," the relative said."

The relative told the 911 operator that the child was cold and refused an offer to be verbally assisted with CPR for the child.

"Right now, we just don’t know what happened," Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding said. "We don’t have strong evidence that somebody from the outside came in and did harm to them, but we haven’t ruled that out."

Wedding called the investigation a puzzle and said lot of pieces are still missing, including the results of toxicology testing. Lockyear said those could come in about three weeks.

"We’re not finished investigating," Wedding said. "We hope that when we investigate more, we’ll figure it out.”

This case just doesn't sit right with us. There's much more to the story and someone out there knows the truth. Our prayers are with the family and we hope that they get the justice and closure they deserve.
