Rae Carruth Glad to be "Out of Here" After 18 Year Stint for Ordering the Murder of Pregna

Former Carolina Panthers football player, Raw Carruth, has been released from jail. Many of us know him more from the 1999 murder of his pregnant girlfriend Cherica Adams who named him as a conspirator with her dying breath.

"Adams, who was 24-years-old at the time, had been driving home after seeing a movie with Carruth in 1999.

Carruth had taken a separate vehicle home after watching the movie.

Van Brett Watkins and Michael Kennedy then pulled up beside Adams' car and Watkins opened fire.

The court at the time heard how Carruth used his own car to block Adams escape route."

Adams was shot four times as she drove her car one night in a plot to kill her so Carruth wouldn't have to pay child support for her unborn son. Adams died after spending a month in a coma and their son, Chancellor Lee Adams, was worn with permanent brain damage and cerebral palsy.

That young man has been a light to his grandmother Saundra Adams, Cherica's mother, who raised him.

"The Carolina Panthers' 1997 first-round draft pick was released from Sampson Correctional Institution in Clinton, North Carolina, after completing his sentence of 18 to 24 years.

Carruth did not speak to reporters on as he left the prison wearing a knit cap and an unzipped jacket on a chilly morning with temperatures in the high 30s.

There was a smattering of applause as he climbed into a white SUV and was whisked away from the prison.

I'm excited about just being out of here. I'm nervous just about how I'll be received by the public,' Carruth, now 44, told WSOC-TV on Sunday.

'I still have to work. I still have to live. I have to exist out there and it just seems like there is so much hate and negativity toward me. I'm actually some what frightened.' "

Carruth says he wants to truly be forgiven by Cherica's mother for his part in her daughter's death. Mrs. Adams has said that she forgives him, will even allow him to have a relationship with his son however, he'll never receive full custody of him.

Watkins, the actual gunman, was sentenced to 40 years in prison and his accomplice, Kennedy, who drove the car was released in 2011.
