Atatiana Jefferson Killed in Her Own Home. "Unlike Botham Jean, I Don't Want a Hug" Fa

Over the weekend the country learned of the horrible death of Atatiana Jefferson. Jefferson was shot and killed by a Fort Worth police officer while she was in her own home.

A neighbor of Jefferson's called the non-emergency police number to ask for a wellness check on Jefferson after they noticed that her front door was open late at night.

Around 2:30am the police showed up, without identifying themselves and began walking around the perimeter of Jefferson's house. When Jefferson noticed strangers outside her house she went toward a window to investigate. Within four seconds, Jefferson was shot dead.

The white police officer who shot her never identified himself and only screamed "put your hands up" before firing at her through the window of her bedroom.

Jefferson had been inside her home playing video games with her young nephew.

James Smith, the concerned neighbor who called the non-emergency number, told CBS Dallas-Fort Worth that he was just trying to be a good neighbor.

"I'm shaken. I'm mad. I'm upset. And I feel it's partly my fault," Smith said. "If I had never dialed the police department, she'd still be alive."

Jefferson's father, Marquis Jefferson, says "You have to know this is somebody's daughter. Somebody loved her. There was a better way. It didn't have to be like that," and, unlike the family of Botham Jean, who was also killed by a police officer, he doesn't want a hug.

"It's another one of those situations where the people that are supposed to protect us are actually not here to protect us," Jefferson's sister, Amber Carr, said. "You know, you want to see justice, but justice don't bring my sister back."

A candlelight vigil was held outside of Jefferson's home last night with people coming to offer support to Jefferson's family.

"Atatiana's stepmother, Noella Jefferson, said her stepdaughter had hopes, dreams and aspirations that she will never be able to fulfill now.

Atatiana graduated with a pre-med degree from Xavier University of Louisiana in 2014.

'We have lost her for no reason,' Noella said. 'We have seen many cases like this where you think that they would have learned from it."

The officer responsible for Jefferson's death has been placed on administrative leave and will be interviewed sometime today. He has yet to be identified but we do know that he has been on the force since 2018.

The police department has already started to try and paint Atatiana Jefferson in a negative light releasing images of a handgun that they found inside of her house. There has been no word on where the handgun was in relation to Jefferson at the time of her death.

Owning a gun and having it inside of your home when you hear a prowler is an American right. Having the unidentified police shoot you while you're in your home minding your business is an American tragedy.

Jefferson's family is being represented by Lee Merritt and he has organized a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs and other costs her family may incur.

The Fort Worth Police Department released a statement saying in part that they "share the deep concerns" of the community. . . whatever.

This is a shame!
