The small town of Shaw, Mississippi is in a state of shock after the gruesome murder of a 20-month-old baby. Little Royalty Marie Floyd was found dead by a family member at her grandmother's home on Monday night and now, her grandmother has been charged with her murder.
When the police arrived at the home, they found Royalty, already dead from an apparent stabbing and inside of a heated oven!
“While the official cause of death is still under investigation, authorities have reason to believe the child was stabbed and burned,” Bolivar County Sheriff Kevin Williams said.
The body has been sent to the state crime lab in Jackson for an autopsy, Williams said.
Neighbors like Earlean Carter came outside when blue lights surrounded the home Monday night.
“It just shocked everybody,” Carter said. “I thought the house was empty. I didn’t know no one lived there."
Crime scene tape and children's toys littered the front yard of the house Tuesday as investigators with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation took photos and searched the yard for evidence.
Many in the small town said they were shocked and upset."
"The girl's grandmother, 48-year-old Carolyn Jones, has been charged with first-degree murder, Bolivar County Sheriff Kevin Williams said. Her bond has been set at $500,000."
The mother of the baby, Veronica Shant'e Jones, posted a farewell message to her daughter on social media saying, in part, "the hardest thing that I ever had to go through in my life'. 'My heart has been ripped from my chest."
Jones also denies that her mother could have been the one responsible for the child's death.
At this time, the child's grandmother is the only suspect but the authorities are still investigating. A GoFundMe account has been opened to help the family with burial expenses for little Royalty. We pray that there is justice served in this case. No child should ever have to meet this fate.
