Somewhere in life we all realize, everybody has a chapter of their story they don't want to read aloud. Today on the Facebook Watch talk show "Red Table Talk" we all learned that Jada Pinkett-Smith had been keeping a certain bone to her skeleton tucked away in her closet. She once sold drugs to support herself.
Pinkett-Smith, her mother Adrian Banfield-Norris and her two children Willow and Jaden Smith sat around the red table to discuss parenting. The generations discussed the vast differences in the parenting styles that they received growing up. Banfield-Norris was raised in a Black middle class family where the parent's word was law. Pinkett-Smith was born when she was only 18-years-old, still very much unprepared for adulthood, and before she became what she calls a "functioning addict".
Pinkett-Smith goes on to tell her children that she "had to hustle" and "there was a certain kind of lifestyle" that she "wanted to live" so she was "in the streets, selling drugs, all kinds of stuff" to have what she wanted. Watch the talk below.
The group also addressed Jaden's "dress" wearing and fashion forward style that had his father up in arms.
This show just keeps getting better and better! Every single week there's some type of cathartic, "come to Jesus" moment. I really enjoy these episodes and I hope that this family continues to keep the lines of communication open so that we can all keep having these honest conversations.
